3 Types of Wood Fences

3 Types of Wood Fences

Did you know there are three types of wood fences?

Wood fences are still the most popular type of fence material for Maryland residences. They are the only natural material on the market for fences and are often more affordable than vinyl, composite, steel, or aluminum fencing. If you decide to go with a wood fence, you should know that there are multiple options even within this category. Below are the three main types of wood fences you might come across.

1. Pressure-Treated Pine

Pressure-treated pine is the most common type of wood fence material. It is also the most affordable. Manufacturers of pressure-treated pine infuse and coat the pine timber in chemicals that preserve it against the weather and insects for greater longevity. They place the timber in a pressure chamber, so the chemicals seep into the wood fibers for ultimate preservation. Pressure-treated pine is both affordable and long-lasting; of course, it will require some occasional TLC with washing, sealcoating, and repairing as needed.

2. Cedar

Another fine option is cedar. Cedar is naturally resistant to insects with its insect-repelling resins. It also has a beautiful red color and aroma. For a high-quality wood that is still affordable, one may find cedar to be ideal. It still requires more maintenance than a vinyl or composite fence, such as cleaning, staining, and repairing, but it is also highly durable and long-lasting. Cedar structures can last for upwards of a hundred years! All in all, cedar is a fence material that packs in both outstanding durability and charm.

3. Exotic Wood Species

A third option that few think about is exotic wood. These types of wood fences comprise a family of hardwoods, like mahogany, tigerwood, teak, Brazilian walnut, ipe, and others. Each of these woods has its unique features. Hardwoods are often a darker hue than cedar or pressure-treated pine, and because of their density, they are very long-lasting. On the other hand, they can also be slightly more challenging to install. Which types of wood fences do you prefer?
