Clean Your Vinyl Fence in 3 Easy Steps

Discover how you can take care of your vinyl fence!

Vinyl fences are well-loved thanks to how easy they are to maintain, but easy maintenance doesn’t mean zero maintenance! One of the most important home improvement tasks you can knock out for your vinyl fence in the summer is a thorough cleaning. Here are three easy steps to have your vinyl fence looking brand new in no time.

Give It a Good Rinse

Start by using a garden hose to rinse off any loose debris or dirt from the surface. This has the added benefit of showing you where some potential problem areas are located. Now that you know what you should be targeting, use a cleaner designed for use on vinyl fences or a simple household cleaner that is appropriate for vinyl surfaces. Apply the solution to the surface of your vinyl fence, working in sections. Once it sits for a couple of minutes to loosen the dirt, use a soft brush to scrub the surface. Wipe away any extra dirt or cleaner with a soft cloth.

The Tough Stuff

If you have tougher stains lingering on the surface of your vinyl fence, you might need something a little bit heavier duty. Use a small amount of bleach diluted in water and a firmer brush to get off stubborn stains. Always test your bleach solution on a small, out-of-sight patch of fence before using it along the entire length. Make sure that there are no plants or flowers directly against your vinyl fence that could be damaged from using bleach, or cover them up with a tarp while you work. Complete the same steps as above, but applying more pressure and using a little more elbow grease. Rinse off your vinyl fence and pat yourself on the back!

The Really, Really Tough Stuff

Some vinyl fences get pretty dirty and end up with tar or paint on the surface. It’s best to start removing these substances by chipping at them with a plastic tool. Always keep sharp objects or metal from the surface, as these can crack or damage the surface of your fence.
