How Do I Prepare My Deck for the Snow?

snow deck damage

Get ready for a March snow storm!

Parts of Maryland are expected to receive anywhere from four to twelve inches of snow next week. Are you prepared? If you’re looking for ways to protect your deck from the wintery mix, read on.

Before the Snow

Take a little time out of your day and prepare your deck for the impending weather. Sweep away any dirt or debris and wash the entire deck, ensuring the clear off any mildew that may have formed this winter.

Clear the Deck

If you have any patio furniture, bring it in or cover it up to protect it from the precipitation. Anchor down any chairs or furniture that may be moved around by the wind or any other aspects of the storm. Oftentimes the damage that occurs to your deck during a storm is caused by objects you keep on your decks such as planters or chairs.

After the Storm

Resist the urge to over-shovel your deck. Plastic or composite deck boards aren’t damaged by water and your wooden deck has been protected with treated lumber to combat wood rot or warp. This means that large amounts of snow in cold water do not pose a high moisture risk.

Excessive shoveling can cause damage to your deck. If you need to shovel an exit path or pathway, do your best to keep the tip of the shovel from coming in contact with your deck. Remove the top layer of snow with a shovel, and sweep the rest away with a broom.
