Protect Your Deck This Winter!

Protect your deck from the elements.

Halloween has come and gone which means that we’re officially heading into the holiday season. The winter months can be pretty brutal here in Maryland, and we have to make sure to take care of the aspects of our home that will be exposed to the elements.

Clean Your Deck

Before the first chilly winter wind comes through, clear away all of the clutter on your deck. Pots and planters left out during the winter can cause moisture, which tends to leave the wood becoming discolored. Make sure that you’ve stacked your patio furniture and stowed it away for winter.

Remove Mold Buildup

Decks are a common breeding ground for mold and mildew. Before the winter months set in, check in between the tight boards and cracks of your deck. Mold potentially decreases the integrity of your platform and needs to be removed as soon as it’s formed.

Give it a Good Scrub

The best way to keep things free from debris is to scrub them down. It’s important to keep the surface of your deck clean because this debris could potentially rot the surface of your deck and cause deterioration.

Remove Snow

When that first snowfall does come, be prepared. Just as snow can potentially damage a roof, it becomes heavy on your deck and can also cause damage. Avoid using salt or other ice melting products on your wood surface as they may cause discoloration or damage to the finish.
