A Sunroom or Screened Porch? That is the Question

A sunroom is a finished room that gives your home additional space

Both a sunroom or a screened porch would be excellent for your home. However, they indeed have their differences. Because we’re experts at installing sunroom and screened porches, we want to help you make a well-informed decision. Every homeowner is different, and each homeowner knows what’s best for them, their family, and their property. While we can’t necessarily answer this question for you, we can go over some primary differences between sunrooms and screened porches. Read on to discover a few helpful considerations.

Sunroom Vs. Screened Porch As it Relates to Purpose

Both rooms will add additional space to your home. The most significant difference between the two is the wall finishing. We define a screened porch as a roofed structure that uses a mesh screen for its walls. Air flows through a screened porch. It gives you the feeling of being directly outdoors without bugs coming into the room. A sunroom, on the other hand, has glass walls. In a nutshell, a sunroom is like your living room but with a better view. The sunroom is completely enclosed.

When It’s Best to Utilize Sunrooms and Screened Porches

If the outdoors serves as an oasis for you (minus the mosquitos), then a screened porch is probably your best option. You can reap the benefits of all that screened porches have to offer during early spring up until late fall. Pretty much, when the weather becomes cold, you’ll want to give your screened porch a rest until next spring. However, outdoor heaters do help you get more out of screened porches.

Here, our sunrooms are also excellent for three seasons. The main difference between three-season rooms and four-season rooms is that you can use four-season rooms during the winter. You may be thinking that using your HVAC system to heat your sunroom is worth it. However, Maryland‘s winters tend to be relatively mild. It barely snowed in 2019! If you want to extend the use of both a sunroom or screened porch, heaters or fans help. Involving HVAC systems can be costly.

Cost Considerations

A sunroom is indeed costlier because it’s a finished room. However, the aesthetics that it adds to a home is worth the investment. It also doesn’t cost much more than a deck or patio would.  From a financial standpoint, screened porches may be more affordable. But, the decision all boils down to your style, needs, and what will make you happier. A home is your most expensive investment, and home maintenance can last a lifetime.
