The Temperature is Dropping…Prepare Your Fence for Winter

Are you ready for the first snowfall?

There is no nice way to say it—it’s absolutely freezing outside! Now that winter has arrived and winter weather is on the way, it’s time to winterize your wood fence and make sure it stays in good shape for the wet and yucky weather to come.

Repair or Replace

First, take a walk around your wood fence and make sure that it is in good condition. If you have any repairs that need to be done, now is the time to take care of them. The same thing does for replacing your fence. If there has been major damage done as a result of summer storms or the hurricane, don’t wait any longer to take care of the problem. The weight of winter snow and ice will just do further damage to your wood fence and lead to more problems down the road.

Protect Your Fence from Dry Rot

Dry rot is a huge problem for wood fences over the winter. Winterizing your wood fence means taking a few extra steps to protect it! If you already have portions of your wood fence affected by dry rot, remove the damaged section completely. Next, use a solution of mild detergent or diluted bleach to scrub the remaining section of fence. Use the same type of wood on the rest of your fence to replace the missing portion.

Even if you don’t already have any dry rot on your fence, you should take the time to prime and paint (or stain) your wood fence before weather comes. Any moisture that gets into your fence from snow or ice can start rot or help to attract insects. Moisture is the number one enemy of your wood fence, so guard against its effects accordingly.
