7 Patio Lighting Ideas

Paver Patio 4

How would you light your patio? We can make it happen.

A patio can be a lovely place to be, but if you intend to spend any time on it in the evening or even the early morning, sufficient lighting will be necessary. A fire pit doesn’t provide enough lighting on its own, unfortunately. If you would like to avoid the garish flood lights on your patio, check out these seven patio lighting ideas. If you are looking to install a new patio in greater central Maryland, Freedom Fence and Deck is at your service.

1. Recessed Lighting

Recessed lighting can be inserted into your patio’s perimeter, creating built-in lighting that illuminates the entire area sufficiently. Flush with the platform, it is safely out of the way, and with the right brightness, you won’t have to worry about the light blinding you from below.

2. Path Lighting

Path lighting usually looks like little lanterns that stick in the ground and line a pathway. They can also line your patio on at least one side, adding a charming line of lights that sufficiently shows where the border lies and improving traffic safety.

3. LED Strip Lighting

LED strip lighting can be installed under patio steps or sitting wall ledges. They could also be inserted directly into a patio’s border. This kind of lighting can create an ambient glow that decently illuminates the outdoor living area and highlights key features.

4. Step Lighting

Step lighting is usually recessed lighting in the patio step risers or stringers, which would only exist if the patio is on a slope leading to another part of the yard. Patio step lighting is worthwhile for the safety it provides.

5. Lanterns

You can’t beat outdoor lanterns with lit candles inside for creating a cozy ambiance. Placing different sizes of lanterns in key patio corners and on tables can be a simple but stunning way to illuminate your patio.

6. String Lights

String lights are also highly popular for lighting up patios. If you don’t have a pergola or pavilion, you could use tall stakes, trees, or privacy screens to attach string lights from one side of your patio to the other overhead.

7. Outdoor Pendant Lighting

With the right structure overhead, you can also install outdoor pendant lights, creating an outdoor living room feel or defining a particular zone, such as an outdoor kitchen.
