Learn how to keep your natural stone patio pristine on all levels here.

A natural stone patio is a high-end patio. Natural stone patios can use flagstone, bluestone, limestone, sandstone, granite, travertine, or marble, just to name a handful of options. All of them are extremely durable and beautiful. There’s nothing quite like using a natural material like stone for your home’s outdoor living space. Although they are very tough, they do need maintenance to keep looking great. Learn how to clean a natural stone patio right here.

How to Clean a Natural Stone Patio

Sweep away Loose Debris

The first step is to use a broom to sweep dirt, sand, fallen leaves, pollen, and other debris from your patio. Create a clean slate before washing your patio. That includes clearing away the patio furniture as well as loose dirt.

Garden Hose for Light Washing

Next, you can use a garden hose to spray down your patio, especially if you are merely loosening and removing surface dirt. Spraying your patio with a garden hose could have enough water pressure to brighten up your patio once again.

Warm Water and Mild Soap for Deeper Cleaning

If you would like to take a more thorough approach, you could mix a bit of mild dish soap and warm water to create a gentle cleaning solution. You could then use some elbow grease to scrub the patio clean with a non-abrasive brush or broom. Afterward, rinse off the patio so that it is soap-free.

3 Different Solutions for Mold, Mildew, and Stains

If you notice mildew, mold, or stains on your patio from fall leaf tannins or old spills, you could use one or more of these three cleaning options:

  • A white vinegar and warm water solution
  • A baking soda paste
  • A commercial natural stone patio cleaning product

You will likely need to leave the cleaning product on the mold or stain for at least 30 minutes, then scrub and rinse it off.

Alternative: Use a Pressure Washer with Care

If you decide to use a pressure washer, use a fan-shaped nozzle and a low-pressure setting to avoid damaging the stone.

How to Prevent Stains on Your Natural Stone Patio

Stains can be a hassle to remove, but it is best to address them quickly. To prevent them from forming on your natural stone patio, seal your patio every year or every other year.
