Basic Pergola Designs

As you likely know, pergolas are slatted roofs that may or may not have columns as supports. Their primary purpose is to filter sunlight over a patio, deck, walkway, or driveway. If there is a hardscape surface that needs some shade, you could use a pergola. A pergola could be a perfect fit for any part of your property that gets more direct sunlight than you would like.

However, they do not keep out rain unless you add appropriate panels over the slats. These panels can be clear or solid, depending on whether you want to allow more or less sunlight. You can also train climbing plants on them so that they create a bower over your head. Yet another option for covering a pergola would be pergola tarps, which are tough fabric covers that drape over the top of a pergola. Retractable awnings are an attractive alternative, which gives you more flexibility for access to sunlight and air overhead.

Pergola Uses

Pergolas can be large and wide, or they can be narrow and long. It all depends on how you use one.

Some pergolas overhang garage doors or exterior doors for shade. They add a new dimension to your home’s exterior.

Some pergolas cover walkways that run along the side of a home, garage, or garden.

Other pergolas are square or rectangular in shape and reside on a patio or deck. They might attach to the house or stand freely. These types are the most common and are used for creating an outdoor living zone.

Others still have no columns and connect two buildings, such as a house and a detached garage, and cover a breezeway. It is quite amazing how flexible a pergola design can be!

Popular Pergola Materials

Wood

Wood pergolas are usually made of cedar, compared to other types of lumber. Wood pergolas are more affordable than other types, but can require more maintenance. You must prevent wooden pergolas from termites, mold, and other problems. Cleaning and sealing a wood pergola can help preserve it for longer. Even so, wooden pergolas offer a warm and rustic look and feel.

Vinyl

Vinyl pergolas are easier to maintain and can last longer than wood pergolas. They cost more, but their cost evens out with wood pergolas with the lower maintenance costs. Vinyl pergolas are usually white, allowing them to be neutral and timeless. Outdoor vinyl products, such as fences, decks, and pergolas, are better than ever today at resisting warping, cracking, discoloring, and rotting.

Metal

Metal pergolas exist, and are usually made of aluminum or steel. Aluminum is a lightweight metal with decent strength, while steel is the strongest of all. Metal pergolas are sleek, modern, and usually dark in color. They resist rusting because of their protective coatings, which may need touching up after a long time.

Pergola Additions

Pergolas can have additional coverings, but that is just the beginning. They can feature curtains to insulate and add privacy, and, as mentioned earlier, they could be the supporting structure for climbing plants or hanging potted plants. They could have lighting as well. As an outdoor living feature, a pergola is meant to shelter and set apart outdoor seating areas, kitchens, hot tubs, and more.
