5 Under-Deck Design Ideas

deck with screened porch

What to do with the space under your deck…we’ve got ideas!

If you have a high-elevation deck, there’s a good chance that you have plenty of room underneath it to do something completely different. Could you utilize this space for additional outdoor living purposes? Why not? There are at least five under-deck design ideas you can try on for size with Freedom Fence and Deck in central Maryland.

1. Patio

A patio is a beautiful platform for outdoor living. It is grounded and is better able to accommodate grills and fire pits safely than decks. Your under-deck patio could extend beyond the deck and into the backyard. A patio off your ground-floor back door could be a smart way to use this space.

2. Storage

If your deck provides enough outdoor living space for your liking, you can also use the space under your deck for storage. It can be a great place to house garden supplies, bicycles, and other tools. Make your storage area safe with a lattice skirting and a locking door.

3. Low-Elevation Deck

Another under-deck design idea is to create another deck. Your backyard deck could have two levels connected by a staircase. A low-elevation deck that matches the high-elevation deck can make your home exterior feel more unified.

4. Screened Porch

If you aren’t a fan of the harshness of the great outdoors but want to feel connected with nature, a screened porch could do the trick. Creating a screen room under the deck will give you a private outdoor living room that is safe from bugs while letting in the fresh air. Ceiling fans and patio heaters can make it more comfortable, even in more extreme weather.

5. Sunroom

A sunroom, also called a three-season room, is yet another under-deck design idea. It offers even more protection from the elements than a screened porch. With glass or vinyl windows, a sunroom keeps you comfortable in windy weather.
