Can You Use a Patio in Winter?

We’ve got some brilliant ideas for your winter patio!

If you love spending time outdoors or want to spend more time surrounded by fresh air and nature, then your patio is a great place to do it. Having a backyard where you can sit outdoors and relax is a privilege. In Maryland, you can use your new patio most of the time in the year, but what about winter? Here’s how you can use a patio in winter!

A Heating Feature Is Essential

A source of heat is essential to make any patio bearable for a long period in winter. It could be a fire pit, an outdoor fireplace, a patio heater or two, or a chimera. A safe outdoor heat source will help you and others keep from freezing as you gather.

Sufficient Outdoor Lighting

Daylight fades as early as 4 or 5 pm in Maryland in winter, which means it’s best to have some outdoor lighting in place if you want to enjoy winter evenings outdoors after work or on the weekends. Outdoor lighting could look like ambient lighting, lanterns, string lights, and more for patios.

Enough Comfortable Seating

If you are gathering a group on your patio, you could use camping chairs or patio furniture. You could also install built-in patio benches that line one or more sides of the patio. If your patio has at least one sitting wall, be sure to add seat cushions to make them more comfortable in frigid weather.

Optional Enclosures

A patio could be more comfortable with extra shade and shelter in winter. A pergola or pavilion with curtains could help insulate the area, and a retractable awning can provide some shelter. You could even use a clear outdoor dome tent or a sunroom enclosure to get 360 views of your backyard from your patio while staying insulated.

Winter-Friendly Plants & Decor

You can make your winter patio come more alive in winter with evergreens like boxwood and holly, and decorations like Christmas ornaments and sculptures. Festive blankets can do double-duty, adding color while keeping you warm.
