How to Care for Any Fence

Keep any fence in great condition using this simple advice.

A residential fence doesn’t do much, but it does provide a very significant benefit for your property, which is home security, not to mention a higher property value. The right fence can elevate your property, making you feel more at ease and boosting your home’s curb appeal. As it will exist outdoors as a natural feature around your home, you don’t generally have to think about it. Even so, there are ways to care for any fence that will give you the most value for your fence.

Inspect Your Fence for Damage

At a minimum, you can scan your fence for any signs of damage once a year or so. Catching problems early on, such as rotten wood, leaning fence posts, sagging gates, or broken pickets, will make you aware of what needs fixing to keep your property in the best condition possible.

Keep the Ground Well-Graded

Well-draining soil is highly important for your fence’s longevity. If the ground forms deep puddles every time there is heavy rainfall, and your residential fence is sitting in the floodwaters, it could be more susceptible to rotting. You may need to regrade the land or install a French drain to prevent floods from happening again.

Clean Your Fence

Is it really necessary to clean your property fence? If you want to make your fence last as long as possible, then it is good to wash it at least once every few years or once a year. You could use a pressure washer at a low setting or scrub the fence. If the fence has mold or mildew, you will need to use a solution to remove it.

Repair Your Fence

Fences go bad in one way or another eventually, even if the damage is as minor as a broken picket, a rotten fence post cap, or a bit of rusted chain-link. It doesn’t hurt to address these issues, especially those that can turn into a bigger problem later on.

Stain Your Wood Fence

If you have a wood fence, you can make it last exponentially longer if you clean and stain it every few years. Wood fence stains usually include a sealant that protects the wood from moisture problems, termites, etc.
