3 Different Pool Deck Materials

Low Maintenance Deck 71

If you need a pool deck, these are the three best materials for the job.

With summer in full swing, you will be sure to want to jump into a swimming pool. What better way to enjoy summer than to take a dip in your own backyard whenever you want? If lounging by the pool at your own home sounds appealing to you, you might need a pool deck to go around it or at least access it if it is above-ground. Check out these three different pool deck materials to see which option might work best for your needs, home, and budget.

1. Ipe

Ipe is arguably the most affordable pool deck material on the market and the most resilient among the wood deck options. Wood decks can work well around swimming pools, but Ipe stands above the rest as a dense, water-resistant, and beautiful option compared to cedar or pressure-treated pine.

With Ipe, you will need to clean and seal the deck every few years or even more frequently. As soon as you notice the wood absorbing water, it’s time to reseal the deck when the weather forecast predicts no rain for a few days.

2. Composite

Composite decking is a step above wood decks in terms of its maintenance needs and upfront cost. Composite decks are made of a combination of recycled wood and plastic fibers and do not need sealing. They cost a little more upfront than wood decking, but they cost less to maintain and look just as good as natural wood.

Composite decks can expand and contract with the weather, but proper installation will accommodate that and should not be a problem. Dark-colored composite decks can get hot underfoot, but with a reflective coating, they won’t burn your feet.

3. PVC

PVC decking is 100% polyvinyl chloride; it is also known as vinyl decking. This type of PVC material is geared toward withstanding outdoor conditions, so that it will not warp, crack, discolor, or rot. It comes in various neutral colors and can be one or two-toned.

PVC decking is the most expensive type of pool deck material, but, like composite, it has low maintenance costs.
