5 Backyard Deck Fire Safety Tips

Wood Deck 12

Stay safe on your deck when dealing with fire!

Every season is a great season for a backyard campfire or outdoor grilling in Maryland! Whether you want to gather around a fire pit or create a feast on the grill, it is certainly worth taking the steps to make it a safe experience. Follow these five backyard deck fire safety tips for a great time all around!

1. Keep Fires Away from the House

Where you place your grill or fire pit on your deck matters. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and keep your appliance at least several feet away from your house. The more isolated the fire pit or grill is from other flammable objects, the better.

2. Do Not Light Fires on a Windy Day

Wind is powerful enough to cause small embers to ignite a house fire. If it’s a windy day and the wind is blowing in the direction of your house, you might not want to light a campfire that day. Wind can carry flames and embers alike onto flammable surfaces. If you do light a fire, make sure to put out the fire completely afterward.

3. Use Fire Mats to Protect the Deck’s Surface

Even on calm days, you can protect your deck’s surface from falling embers with the help of fireproof mats. Sometimes, you might not be able to control if a burning twig or a piece of food falls on the deck. The mat underneath will not just protect your deck from getting burned, but from getting stained as well.

4. Use and Care for Grills, Fire Pits, Etc., Properly

Properly using your backyard grill, fire pit, fireplace, etc., will generally prevent any fires from happening as well. Clean your appliance regularly to remove excess soot, oil, grease, and other debris that could cause problems down the road.

5. Keep the Right Fire Extinguisher Nearby

Never put out electrical or grease fires with water. Use a fire extinguisher designed to extinguish these kinds of flames. Have the right kind of fire extinguisher, whether an actual fire extinguisher or water, nearby.
