Your deck or patio could be the perfect setting to welcome winter wildlife!
Winter is coming, and it is already so cold that jackets aren’t enough to stay warm outdoors anymore! Birds migrate and squirrels hibernate, but that doesn’t mean winter is totally devoid of wildlife. When squirrels and birds are passing through your backyard, you can make it a welcoming place by creating a winter wildlife sanctuary on your deck or patio. Here are a few ways to do it.
Provide Water
Even on a cold winter’s day, some birds, like robins, love taking a bath. A bird bath is never useless in winter; it’s a source of drinking water for birds, squirrels, and other creatures throughout the year. Some bird baths are heated, but this feature isn’t always necessary in Maryland.
Fill Bird Feeders
Bird feeders can be set on a pedestal or hung from a stand or porch overhang. You can find containers to fill with bird seed or bird seed packed into fun shapes like bells, wreaths, or woodland creatures. Set out on a deck or patio, bird feeders become a hub for birds of all kinds, which you can watch from your outdoor living space or through your back door.
Set Out a Smorgasbord for Squirrels & Birds
A popular idea is to set out a smorgasbord of fruits and unsalted nuts in their shells for wildlife. They will come, no doubt. It’s easy to set up the feast on a deck or patio, even on your patio table.
Add Wildlife Houses
Bird houses and squirrel houses can provide places for wildlife to hibernate or rest in safety during cold weather or warm weather. You can leave it to them to furnish their residences with bedding. You can add these features to a tree or a stand in a safe location, away from the main outdoor living area.
Keep the Backyard Natural
Don’t totally clean up your deck or patio; let some fallen leaves remain in case wildlife chooses to make them their building materials for winter homes.
