3 Tips To Caring For Your Wooden Deck

Learn how to care for your wooden deck.

Summer is officially here, so it is the perfect time to ensure that your outdoor features are in perfect conditions.  Chances are that you will be using your wooden deck frequently throughout the summer, so you want to make sure it is in top shape.  Wooden decks are prone to heat and moisture damage, so it is essential that you are inspecting your deck regularly.  Luckily, there are few simple tips for caring for your wooden deck.

Inspect For Rot

Summer is known for hot, dry weather, so it is the best time to go outside and inspect your deck for any damage.  It is essential that you go under your deck and inspect the posts and beams for any structural damage. Take a screwdriver into your wooden deck, and if you can push it easily more than a quarter-inch into the structure, then you probably have rot.  If the rotted area is smaller than a silver dollar, then you can most likely remove it with a chisel and your deck should be fine. If you have a large area of rot, you will have to replace the entire structural member.

Brush and Wash

Everyone wants their wooden deck to be clean and aesthetically pleasing, so make sure you are taking care of your deck’s appearance.  You need to brush all leaves and debris off your deck so that you have a clean surface to wash. If your deck is prone to mildew, then you can purchase a commercial deck cleaner at your local hardware store.  Apply the product on your deck, then wash the deck with your garden hose. If you have a large deck, then you can invest in a power washer, but make sure to not focus in one spot for too long to avoid damaging the structure.

Add Finish

In order to preserve the appearance and overall life of your wooden deck, it is important to apply a sealant every few years.  You can know if your deck needs sealant if you add a couple of drops of water on your deck, and it soaks through instead of beading off.  Look for a water-based sealant that has UV protection so that you can avoid your deck turning gray. Apply the finishing product with a brush or roller depending on the size of your deck.
