Creating a Bird-Friendly Deck or Patio

Low Maintenance Deck 63

Welcome feathery wildlife to your backyard deck with these ideas.

Bird-watching is a pastime that many can enjoy, whether they are young or old. There is something fascinating and relaxing about watching these feathery little (or not so little) friends come by your home. If you are interested in creating a bird-friendly deck or patio, consider these ideas below. If you need an updated or new deck to add these features in central Maryland, Freedom Fence and Deck is here to help you out.

Integrating Planters

Planters can look like built-in planters on decks or patios, or it could look like an assortment of your favorite pots and deck railing planters. The types of plants that work best for attracting birds include native plants and plants with seeds, berries, and secluded nesting spots.

Using Bright Colors

Birds are attracted to bright colors. Unless you are a strictly earth tones sort of person, you can indulge in your love of bright, bold colors on your bird-friendly deck or patio through your choice of plant pots and plants.

Adding Bird Feeders

Even if you have an exceptionally fruitful year with plenty of rain and large, fast-growing plants, birds will still appreciate some extra food via bird feeders. Different birds prefer different types of food, but you can still invite plenty of species to your backyard with planters in different spots at different heights, away from predators.

Adding Bird Baths

Birds use bird baths to hydrate and bathe. Some bird baths can hook onto deck railings, while others classically sit on the ground. If you add one to your deck or patio, you could put one beside the area or at one end.

Installing Nesting Spots

Installing nesting spots, like tall, isolated evergreens and bird houses, will let you see birds build nests and rear their young. These nesting spots should be high and safe from predators and high-volume gathering spots. Otherwise, birds can get nervous and abandon their nests.

Keeping Your Distance

Birds, especially larger ones like mourning doves, robins, and blue jays, are skittish around people. It’s best to have a way to watch birds from a distance or from a screened porch or sunroom.
