Tips to Care for Your Deck This Spring

Low Maintenance Deck 108

Is your deck ready for spring?

If you have a backyard deck, you have a wonderful place to make memories with family and friends in the comfort of your own outdoor living space. A deck is an excellent platform for relaxing and entertaining alike, but it needs maintenance now and then. All things need cleaning, and the cleaner it is, the better you can enjoy your deck for years to come.

Keep It Clear of Debris

You want to keep the deck clear of loose debris as much as possible. Decks are resilient, but the longer things like fall leaves, dirt, and even litter stay on your deck, the less appealing it looks and the dirtier the surface gets. Fall leaves and dirt can leave stains on the deck; if you see a significant amount of debris, it’s best to just sweep it off as soon as possible.

Clean up Spills Immediately

Spills happen. You might have accidentally spilled your lemonade or your beer. You might have dropped some salsa by accident. Things happen. While you could wait for the rain to wash the stains away, it’s better to just wipe it up immediately to prevent it from spreading around on your shoes, your pets’ paws, and around your house.

Clear All Things off of the Deck before Deep Cleaning

Spring through fall is the best time to clean your deck thoroughly. Before you begin, clear the deck completely of all furniture, potted plants, fire pits, and movable décor. You want to get every square inch on the deck fresh and new.

Use the Right Cleaning Tools

Different deck materials may call for different cleaning methods. In general, you can use a pressure washer on all decks, but be careful with the water pressure. If you use a deck cleaner, choose a product that is safe for that material. If you have a wood deck, use a sealing product suitable for the deck wood. Smooth out your deck with sandpaper if it has splinters.

Choose a Clear, Sunny Day to Clean the Deck

Check the weather before you deep clean the deck. Make sure you have at least a few hours of no rain to do the job; it will make it a lot easier and safer. If you have a few clear, sunny days to let the deck dry, that’s great, too!

Spruce up Your Deck for Ultimate Functionality and Pleasure

When the deck is completely clean and dry, place everything back on the deck. Consider cleaning your outdoor furniture as well to make it fresh and comfortable. The only thing left to do after that is to enjoy your fresh, clean deck!
